Further to my blog post last week hoping for great things from Microsoft's new search engine "Bing".  I had an email last night from the people at MSN / Windows Live Search / Bing inviting me to take a look.  They explained:

"Bing is a new world of search services. It provides users with a powerful way to cut through the clutter and make more informed decisions. Among its new features:

  • Instant Answers: finds specific answers to informational queries, e.g. "What is 55F in Celsius" offers rich media and structured data and a general search term like “weather” yields a 5-day forecast for your location.

  • Preview: enables searchers to find out more information about a site by previewing individual results on the results page to reduce back-and-forth searching.

  • Best Match: delivers results with deep links and highly relevant information to help searchers to get the right information faster."

I haven't used it enough to judge if they can deliver on these claims, however it certainly has an attractive looking interface - much cleaner than before:

Search results page looks very similar to the old Live Search, however it has a useful related searches results to the left (rather than at the bottom like Google):

It promises to offer greater speed (for example, videos will play straight away) and a better mix of search results.  We'll be watching carefully to see these new features and search trends affect the traffic for our Bristol SEO clients.

Microsoft has a great mountain to climb to capture market share, however maybe in a few years we'll be "binging" rather than "googling" for life's answers....

Just wish I had had the foresight last year to register the domain name Bing.com for a few dollars.
